Here is the first CD for P.E.K. by a recently formed band with a very different sound from most others. Led by two formidable reeds players, Chris Pearce and Andy Leggett, on clarinets and saxes they play a wonderful selection of tunes, including a couple which I'd never heard before. Most of you will be familiar with Chris Pearce's playing; he was with the Antique Six for many years, he also plays with Richard Leach and leads his own Frenchmen Street Jazz Band. You may not know Andy Leggett so well. He first played in the Bristol area in the 1960s and in 1975 he formed the group Sweet Substitute for whom he wrote and arranged. He later toured with several great bands including The Midnite Follies Orchestra, The Pasadena Roof Orchestra and the Syd Lawrence Band. From 1996 he played, mostly in Germany, with Rod Mason's band - which is why most of us haven't come across his music. The other band members are:- Dave Deakin trombone; Phil Probert banjo & guitar; Len Thwaites double bass and Ian Parry drums. This CD was recorded live at the 2016 Bude Jazz Festival and the tunes are:- The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise; Shine; Meet Me Tonight In Dreamland; Trog's Blues; I Know That You Know; Sultry Serenade; Everywhere You Go; Memphis Shake; Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground; Last Mile Blues; Buddy Bolden Stomp; Out Of The Gallion; In My Darkest Hour; Mood Indigo; Milenburg Joys. Most of you will need no introduction to Dave Moorwood's music. His Rascals of Rhythm is one of the most joyous-sounding bands I know. Here we have his Frisco-style band, broadly playing the music of The Yerba Buena Jazz Band of the 1940s. It's an equally exuberant and joyous sound but delivered by a power-house eight-piece band led by Andy Woon and Tony Davis on trumpets. The Frisco-style of jazz was a development of the music of King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band of 1923 and many of the tunes on this CD have been recorded by King Oliver in the 1920s and, later, by the Yerba Buena Band in the '40s. The other band members are:- Mike Wills clarinet & soprano sax; Chris Gower trombone; Perry Lock piano; Dave Moorwood banjo; John Arthy tuba; Andy Crisp drums. Judy Eames sings on 5 tracks. The tunes are:- Flatfoot; Smokey Mokes; Love Is Good For Anything That Ails You; Muddy Water; Irish Black Bottom; Sweet Like This; Miss Jenny's Ball; Sobbin' Blues; Clementine (From New Orleans); Sweet Mama; Got Everything But You; Buddy's Habit; I Hate A Man Like You; The Original Dixieland One-step. Recorded live at the 2016 Bude Jazz Festival. (71mins) Great CD!
I confess I'd never heard of the Chase Jazzmen until I was asked to record them in February. This six-piece band plays jazz standards at clubs and functions around the West Midlands - the band's name is derived from their home base area near Cannock Chase. The line-up is:- Tony Billingsley trumpet & vocals; Dave Deakin trombone; Cormac Loane reeds; Dave Boxold banjo, guitar & vocals; Simon Smith double bass; Jim Harney drums. The tunes on this studio recording are:- When You're Smiling; South; Out Of Nowhere; A Kiss To Build A Dream On; Sultry Serenade; Sway; Pennies From Heaven; New Orleans; I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate; There Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens; Stranger On The Shore; Five Foot Two, Eyes Of Blue; Almost Like Being In Love; I Wan'na Be Like You. I first recorded the Sunset Café Stompers about 25 years ago when they were led by the great and much missed Alan Potton. There have been many changes since then but the band is still true to its New Orleans roots. This new CD was recorded (not live) at a church in Sherborne, Dorset in March 2017. The line-up is Steve Graham cornet; Trevor Whiting reeds; Pete Middleton trombone; Mike Denham piano (a Steinway grand!); Eddie Edwards banjo; Pete Ward double bass; John Coad drums. They are joined on five tracks by Hamish Maxwell vocals. I wish I'd met Hamish years ago - he is an outstanding singer; one of the best I've ever heard! The tunes are:- Gatemouth; The Minstrel Man; Apex Blues; Listen To The Mocking Bird; After My Laughter; Changes; Georgia Swing; The Mooche; Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out; Let Me Call You Sweetheart; Relaxin' At The Touro; Trombone Cholly; I Got An Uncle In Harlem; The Nearness Of You; Ride Red Ride. Here is the first recording by a marvellous quartet of supremely talented musicians who need no introduction from me - Jeff Barnhart (piano & vocals); Anne Barnhart (flute & vocals); Tom "Spats" Langham (banjo, guitar & vocals) and Graham Smith (traps and washboard). They play an astonishingly wide range of musical styles - ragtime to swing, blues to bounce, and show tunes to ballads and jazz standards - all with great panache and enthusiasm. You certainly can't pigeon-hole this band! The CD was recorded over two days in May 2017 (not live sessions) and the tunes are:- Everybody Loves My Baby; On Green Dolphin Street; Careless Love Blues; Red Rose Rag; Sweet Sue - Just You; Pine Apple Rag; If It Ain't Love; San Francisco Bay Blues; The Glory Of Love; Water From An Ancient Well; Some Of These Days; I Surrender Dear; Creole Belles; A Hundred Years From Today; Kansas City Rag; Blue Autumn; The Best Things In Life Are Free. This, the second CD for P.E.K. by Roger Marks' excellent band, was recorded at Sutton Coldfield Jazz Club in July 2017 when the band were on fine form at the start of their tour of the Midlands. Their brand of relaxed good-time jazz appeals to the dancers at jazz clubs, so no frantic over-fast tempos here. Very enjoyable! The line-up is the same as their previous CD (PKCD-398) and the tunes are:- Blame It On The Blues; You Tell Me Your Dream; Martha; Burgundy Street Blues; When Your Hair Has Turned To Silver; Battle Hymn Of The Republic; Whose Honey Are You?; Alabama Jubilee; Corrine Corrina; Oriental Man; Does Jesus Care; I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles; My Gal Sal; Golden Leaf Strut.
